If you’re not following Joel Comm, do it. Now. Joel is one of my favorite resources for technology. He’s blunt, honest, and incredibly transparent. There’s not a day that goes by that I’m not checking in to what he’s discovered next… and today was a biggy!
Joel let everyone know about a new tool online, remove.bg. The tool utilizes artificial intelligence to analyze images with people and then accurately and finitely remove the background.
If you’ve ever tried to do with with Photoshop, you know what an awful experience it is. Despite Photoshop’s eraser options, and even their magic options, they still don’t even come close. Watching a great photoshop user erase backgrounds is pretty amazing.
I’m not even going to give you a tutorial on how because I hope to never, ever, ever, ever use that functionality again. Here’s a test that I just uploaded to remove.bg. I really wanted to give it a good test – no close-ups and plenty of background details.

The engine even removed the bicycle! The modified photo also adjusted the size and margins to center the image vertically and horizontally. Simply amazing!

Remove.bg has desktop applications for Windows, Mac, and Linux. They also have a Photoshop integration and plugins for Figma, WooCommerce, Sketch, and Visual Studio Code. They also have an API available to inject remove.bg into your workflows. Pricing options include subscription plans and pay as you go.
